Loved by just about everyone in the fashion industry, Kane's collection was much anticipated at London Fashion Week. In the front row was Anna Wintour, Donatella to her left and Joan Collins. And everyone else was trying to look nonchalant while on their best behaviour and in their best togs, in contrast with the (carefully contrived) dressed-down codes that normally apply to London’s front row ...
The breathtakingly sophisticated collection from Kane, 27, was terrific by any standards. And just as obvious was the inspiration that he derives from Gianni Versace: the seamed bodices and sheer, chiffon racer backs referenced the more aggressively sexual contouring (such as Elizabeth Hurley’s safety-pin dress) that Versace carved out.
Kane created something new with the silhouette, working with gauzy brown and white tablecloth gingham prints and then layering on contrasting blue and white checks. He is showing a real flair for taking commonplace fabrics and making them look fresh.
Essentially this was a series of lovely, fitted and gently flared, womanly dresses that lovingly worshipped at the altar of the female breast. These ladylike visions got more elaborate as panels of lavishly embroidered white beads created dresses that will become collector’s pieces.
Oh, and it’s official. Longer hems are back. Kane did knee-length. Suddenly everything else looks dated.
