Painter Nancy Baker is from Brroklyn and is a self-described solipsist and a general curmudgeon. At first glance, there is something vaguely familiar about her paintings - the faint tug of a fuzzy memory - but upon closer inspection, you start to see strange things happening. Casper the friendly ghost swoops in over a landscape straight out of sixteenth-century Holland; UFOs attack medieval cities; birds drip and dissolve over gardens of earthly delights. The result is part homage to art history, part celebration of mid-century kitsch and, although, a thorough subversion of fine art presentations.
Baker's paintings begin online with a search on Google images, from the depths of the Internet, she dredges up a blend of Old Master paintings, medieval religious iconography, mid-century cartoons and B-movie shaceships; all of which she compiles and catalogs.
